For this week’s class, we’re digging into a TV SF phenomenon: the 90s hit TV show The X-Files. If you would like to preview the episode mentioned below, you can access it on Disney+, where the entire 11 seasons of the series are available. We’ll be watching the episode in class, however, so you don’t need to watch it outside of class.
Day 1
After a few words from me, we’ll watch the pilot episode of The X-Files. Don’t be late, because it’s long and we need to start as soon as possible! (If you miss it and happen to have a Disney+ account, the series is available there.)
Here is a copy of the handout I distributed in class:
Day 2
In the first half of Day 2, we’ll work through the comprehension questions, and start our group discussions.
In the second half, I’ll take questions and also share my thoughts on selected questions from the handout, and talk about the cultural impact of The X-Files on English-speaking cultures.
Journaling
For this week, write about some conspiracy theories familiar to you, and why you think people are attracted to these kinds of (usually outlandish) ideas.
