Here is the content for Week 3 of our course.
Week 3
In today’s class, we reviewed what you were supposed to learn in Global English III, specifically about paragraph structure and grammar. It’s a lot of material, so I was not able to go too in-depth, but it should be enough for you to know what you need to review from Units 1-5 of the textbook. Specifically, I talked about:
- Paragraph Structure as taught in Global English III.
- The grammar topics you’re responsible for remembering from Global English III.
- The general elements of a good paragraph.
- I discussed the rules of formatting for Academic English-styled writing.

Here is a handout example of the formatting rules I taught in class. There are some notes at the bottom to explain what isn’t obvious from the example.
Weekly Paragraph Practice
For this week’s Paragraph Practice, write a Paragraph about any topic you like, but focus on the structure. Make sure it has all the elements of a good paragraph.
Recommended Mind Mapping Software
If you want to make Mind Maps on your computer, you’ll need some software. I recommend the first option below, and the second and third were recommended by past students. Take your pick and learn to use it:
- Scapple (My Mind Mapping Software): Scapple is the Mind Mapping software that I use, and the one I recommend most highly for students.
- Simplemind (Mind Mapping App): Simplemind is one of two free (trial) Mind Mapping applications I recommend trying for onscreen Mind Mapping.
- Xmind (Mind Mapping Software): XMind is the other free (trial) Mind Mapping software you might use.
All of these programs are either free or offer a free-to-use trial period that is long enough for you to use for the semester.
