Lesson 1
For Lesson 1 of Week 4, in small groups you discussed what are some of the Korean social and cultural values you think would be included for criteria for making Korean Heritage Moment videos. We collected a list of these values and shared our thoughts about them.

In the second hour of class, we considered the idea of making a Korean Heritage Minute script.
Think about what moment in Korean history you think is worth making a Korean Heritage Minute about. Remember, it can be from any period of Korean history, but it should not be a well-known incident, person, or struggle. Come to class prepared to discuss your idea as well as how you imagine it could be made into a short video. Consider the following questions:
- What historical figures will be necessary characters to the script?
- How should the scene be made? Do you imagine live action? Animation? Still images and narration?
- What must be included in the minute? What is one event or moment that could be dramatized in your video?
- What dramatic license will be necessary? What is known and what is unknown about the moment or event you’re recreating?
- What Korean social and cultural values does this video represent?
Then you worked in small groups to I asked you to write a Korean Heritage Minute Script as your homework assignment. You can choose your own topic, or think of a new one. Here are the criteria you should follow for your script:
- Intrigue us with Korea’s heritage
- Be producible within resources
- Be truthful within the bounds of dramatic license
- Reflect and celebrate Korean social and cultural values: (consider the list of values we developed in the first part of class)
- Reveal origins
- Surprise, provoke reflection, re-examination, raise questions.
If you are choosing a negative moment in history, you can still try to find a positive aspect to how some Koreans resisted or responded to it. Remember, “Koreans” includes minority groups in Korea, not just the majority.
Note: You don’t need to write a full script, but you should have a clear idea what would be in the script, how the video would be made, what values it reflects, and so on.

Lesson 2
In lesson 2, we’re going to share the ideas for scripts with other groups and discuss those ideas. Which ideas surprised you the most? Which ideas do you think are the most promising, and why?
Homework, Lesson 2: Journaling
For this week’s Journal, please choose any one prompt from the Course Journal Prompts list (available in Course Materials) and write about it.
Alternately, you could instead write about a new Heritage Minute video idea for your own country (not the one you discussed in class) and describe what you would propose to make, as well as why you think it’s an important part of history to share with people from your country.
