Today, we discussed the structure of Persuasive Presentations, and how they follow this basic outline:
1. Define the problem (briefly), and suggest what you think is the best specific solution to the problem.
(This solution should answer the question, “Who should do what specifically to solve this problem?” and the should here isn’t a suggestion but the proposal of a rule, system, institutional approach, or a law.)
2. Present the first reason why you think this solution is the best solution. Include evidence, examples, and explanation of why this reason is valid.
3. Present the second reason why you think this solution is the best solution. Include evidence, examples, and explanation of why this reason is valid.
4. Present the third reason why you think this solution is the best solution. Include evidence, examples, and explanation of why this reason is valid.
5. Optional, but recommended: Present a Counter-Argument and Refutation. Show one “strong” argument against your solution, and show why it’s not really that strong after all.
6. Reiterate the solution you have suggested, emphasizing that it is the best solution for the problem.
After discussing the structure, we talked about some specific examples. We also brainstormed some ideas for possible problems that could be solved in your next presentation in Week 13). Also, I gave people permission to change the topic of their speech to a new problem if they want, instead of presentiong about the same problem they mentioned in their Week 11 Presentations.
LOOKING FORWARD
For Week 13, please prepare a presentation using the outline/structure above. You should present what you think is the best solution to a real problem. Please try to present a specific, realistic solution, and make sure your solution depends on some kind of official, organizational action.
(For example, “People should exercise regularly” is NOT an appropriate solution: that “should” is just advice. Instead, a solution like, “Apartment complexes should be legally required to provide fitness center access to all residents for free,” is a systematic and organizational solution. Who should do what to solve this problem?)
Remember that it’s not your job to provide a long, deep explanation of the problem. Pick a problem that most people will recognize as being a problem, and focus on explaining why your proposed solution is the best solution for this problem.
Your presentation should be 5-10 minutes long.
