Today, I discussed how to make powerpoints that aren’t terrible. Below are the powerpoints I used for this discussion.

LOOKING FORWARD
For our next meeting, you need to make a prepare a presentation.
The topic of your presentation should be the following:
- Suggest an irrational solution to a real problem. Pick a real life problem, such as, “Increasing numbers of students are using Chat-GPT to cheat in writing homework assignments.” Then suggest a crazy solution to that problem, such as, “People should not be allowed internet access while they are students,” or, “Students’ internet browsing history should be supervised by their university to prevent cheating.”
- Your presentation should present several (at least three) reasons why your solution is the best possible solution.
- Your presentation should last approximately five (5) minutes.
- Your presentation should be accompanied by a bad powerpoint. It also needs to be a TERRIBLE powerpoint. All those guidelines I explained in class? Ignore them. Make it deliciously awful.
- While presenting, you need to maintain confidence and use all the other presentation techniques seriously. Present your ideas as if you are presenting a great solution to the problem.
As inspiration, consider the following (satirical) suggestions to problems:
- “Put ‘Em In the Movies” by Bill Hicks. Hicks argues that since terminally ill people don’t enjoy life but only suffer their illnesses slowly while they die in pain, the humane thing to do is to use terminally ill people as stunt extras in action movies. He argues this is a form of euthanasia that benefits the elderly (by ending their suffering) while also benefitting the public (by providing them with more realistic action scenes in movies).
- A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. Swift argues that the best way to prevent children suffering, starving, and living in poverty in Ireland is to capture and serve the children as food to the Irish people. He argues that cannibalism would solve the problem of hunger in Ireland. (He’s actually mocking the cruelty and inhumanity of the English occupiers of Ireland.)
These are extreme examples, of course. If you just want to give some silly reasons supporting your argument, feel free. (This is a Presentation class, not a satire and comedy class.)
Here are some problems that you could present dumb solutions for:
- South Korea has the lowest rate of population growth in the world.
- The dangers of motorized kickboards are a growing concern in society.
- Some experts believe that increased use of social media is correlated with a higher chance of of clinical depression becomes.
- Chat-GPT and other AIs are increasingly being used by students to cheat on homework assignments.
- K-Pop performers are reputedly often abused during their trainee period and early careers.
- The food in cafeterias on campus is substandard in quality and flavor.
Note: you can choose a different problem if you want. These are just examples.
