Today’s class is a bit unusual: we’re going to talk about descriptive writing. We’ll do a speaking exercise in class, and then discuss descriptive writing techniques.

Handout

For this week’s class, there is a handout on discussing places, and on descriptive writing. You can see it below:

Week 11 Practice Paragraph

For this week’s Practice Paragraph, please visit an actual place with a notebook and pen or with your computer or tablet. Spent at least 20 minutes observing the place, and then spend at least ten minutes taking notes about details you observe in the place. Be use to try note sensory details of all kinds—including all five of your senses, if possible.

Then, go home and write a paragraph based on your experience and your notes. Try to convey a specific mood or feeling in your description, but do not state the mood or feeling directly. You should show the mood or feeling based on the details you choose to describe the place.

When you’re happy with your paragraph, save it.
